MANILA, Philippines — Health workers in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) have been equipped with bicycles to enable them to deliver quick services to communities.

“There are communities in these provinces that are hard to reach. We deemed it necessary to issue bicycles to our health workers,” Eduardo Janairo, health regional director for Calabarzon, said yesterday.

The bicycles will help the health workers reach their destinations especially in areas where access to public transportation is limited, Janairo said.

Each bicycle comes with a basket for the workers’ belongings, headlights and a rear rack.

As of February this year, there were 17,351 registered and accredited health workers in Calabarzon.

Of the figure, 2,793 were in Cavite; 1,936 in Laguna; 6,302 in Batangas; 2,252 in Rizal, and 6,867 in Quezon.

Health officials in Calabarzon are also planning to provide bicycles with sidecars to help facilitate transport of patients, and deploy boats or water ambulances in some areas.

The government aims to provide bicycles to each health worker in the country.
