ZAMBOANGA CITY , Philippines  —  Three Abu Sayyaf bandits and a Marine trooper were killed in an encounter in Patikul, Sulu before dawn yesterday.

One of  the slain bandits was believed to be the leader of the group, according to Capt. Felix Serapio Jr., spokesman for the Philippine Marine Corps.

Two other soldiers of the Marine Ready Force-Sulu were wounded in the firefight that occurred at around 2:25 a.m. on Minis Island, according to  Lt. Col. Gerry Besana, spokesman for the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom).

Reports said the soldiers led by Col. Armel Tolato  were responding to a report about the presence of armed men on the islet when they encountered around 50 followers of Abu Sayyaf sub-leader Majid Emamil.

“Heavy fighting ensued resulting in the death of three enemies based on body count,” Besana said.

The military withheld the names of the slain and wounded troopers until after their families are notified.

The wounded soldiers were taken to Camp Gen. Teodulfo Bautista Station Hospital in Busbos, Jolo for treatment.

A pursuit operation has been launched against the bandits.

Lt. Gen. Arnel dela Vega, Westmincom chief, expressed sadness over the death of the soldier.

Dela Vega gave assurance that the operations against the Abu Sayyaf would continue during the holidays.

“All measures are now being undertaken, in accordance with the rules of engagement and with the support of the local government and the populace,” he said.
