BACOLOD CITY , Philippines — The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) has confirmed that there  are barangay officials here who are engaged in the illegal drug trade.

The PDEA clarified that a barangay captain who was recently killed by motorycle-riding men was not involved in drugs.

Nelson Ligaya, chairman of Barangay 16 in this city, was never involved in illegal drugs, according to David Garcia and Chief Inspector Sherlock Gabana, spokesmen for the PDEA and the city police, respectively.

Ligaya, 48, was shot dead by motorcycle-riding men in Purok Paloma last week. He died from six gunshot wounds in the body.

In a speech during the MassKara Festival in October, President Duterte warned a barangay captain engaged in the illegal drug trade to leave the city or he would have them killed.

Garcia did not disclose the number of barangay officials in Bacolod who are involved in illegal drugs. He said they are monitoring them.
