MANILA, Philippines — President Duterte has signed a law strengthening the practice of the criminology profession.

Republic Act 11131 or the Philippine Criminology Profession Act of 2018 mandates the creation of a professional regulation board for criminologists, which will be under the Professional Regulations Commission.

It will replace the board of examiners for criminologists created by the now repealed Republic Act 6506 signed in 1972.

The law aims to strengthen the regulation of the criminology profession by providing specific functions to the board that will be constituted.

Aside from administering the licensure examination for criminologists, the board was also mandated to monitor education institutions offering criminology courses.

It is mandated to hear and investigate cases of malpractice and unethical conduct, and authorized to suspend and revoke the registration of professional criminologists.

The law also identified the privileges of registered criminologists, including priority of appointment in law enforcement positions in government agencies.
