Taiwanese held at NAIA for coral smuggling

Rudy Santos - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Agents of the Bureau of Customs at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) arrested a Taiwanese for allegedly attempting to smuggle corals out of the country amounting to millions of pesos.

A total of 254 live corals were intercepted from the departing Taiwanese passenger at the NAIA Terminal 3, according to Customs district collector Mimel Talusan.

Talusan said the corals weighing 39 kilos were found in the luggage of the suspect.

The corals were turned over to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

Talusan said the Taiwanese failed to present a permit to export the corals, in violation of Republic Act 10863 or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act in relation to RA 10654, which bans the export of endemic coral species.
