Japanese shot in Malate

Marc Jayson Cayabyab - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — A Japanese man who was accused of estafa was shot in front of the Ambassador Hotel in Malate, Manila before noon Thursday.

Masato Ogushi, 67, had just boarded a pedicab in front of the hotel, where he was billeted, when he was shot in the neck by motorcycle-riding assailants along Mabini street at around 11:40 a.m.

The pedicab driver took the victim to the Ospital ng Maynila, where he was reported to be in critical condition.

Police recovered a .45 caliber bullet casing at the crime scene.

Investigators are looking into the victim’s involvement in alleged swindling activities as a motive after a certain Tetsuya Naka reported to the police that Ogushi owed him ¥2.5 million or roughly P1.25 million, according to Senior Inspector Henry Navarro, chief of the Manila Police District’s General Assignments and Investigation Section.
