Fire hits Navy ammo depot in Cavite

Jaime Laude - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — A Philippine Navy ordnance depot in Sangley Point, Cavite went up in smoke yesterday.

Commodore Jonathan Zata, Navy spokesman, said the fire, which broke out at around 7:45 a.m., affected a storage unit or igloo. The fire was declared out after several minutes.

“The igloo contained ammunition for small caliber firearms,” Zata said, referring to bullets for M16 and M14 rifles and caliber .45 pistols.

As of yesterday afternoon, the fire site was still off-limits due to recurring explosions.

“Adjacent offices and even residents... in the housing of military personnel were alerted and advised to evacuate,” Zata said.
