MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has received at least 62 petitions from various barangays and registered voters to participate in the plebiscite on the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL).

“That’s the reason why we have not started printing (the ballots... These petitions came in... at the last minute... We allowed the petitions to continue to ensure we get the most representation in the plebiscite,” Jimenez said.

However, he said not all those who filed their petitions would be allowed to participate in the plebiscite.

Jimenez noted that under the BOL, only the areas contiguous to the proposed Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) could submit petitions for voluntary inclusion.

Aside from Maguindanao, Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Tawi-Tawi, which compose the ARMM, six towns in Lanao del Norte and 39 barangays in six North Cotabato towns will comprise the proposed BARMM.

Despite the delay in the printing of ballots, Jimenez gave assurance that the plebiscite would push through as scheduled on Jan. 21.
