Quakes shake Western Visayas; classes suspended

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — Classes in public and private schools in this city and several towns in Antique were suspended yesterday after three earthquakes jolted parts of Western Visayas.

Mayor Jose Espinosa III also announced the suspension of work at the city hall.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said a magnitude 4.7 quake struck eight kilometers southeast of San Jose, Antique at about 7:45 a.m. It was felt at Intensity 3 in Iloilo City. 

A magnitude 4 quake followed after a minute while another temblor, which had a magnitude of 4.8, struck at around 10:54 a.m. The epicenters of the quakes were located two kms northwest of Sibunag, Guimaras and five kms northwest of Guimbal, Iloilo, respectively.

Both quakes were felt at Intensity 4 in this city.

Two schools in Guimbal town were reportedly destroyed by the quake. – Helen Flores
