Quezon City police officer accidentally shoots self, dies

MANILA, Philippines — A police official died after he accidentally shot himself in his office in Quezon City yesterday morning.

Inspector Ceferino Gatchalian, the head of the Kamuning police station’s drug enforcement unit, died while waiting for surgery at the East Avenue Medical Center at around 8:10 a.m.

Probers said Gatchalian was about to head home when he accidentally fired his service firearm, a 9mm pistol, from its waist holster. He sustained a gunshot wound in the right part of the abdomen.

They said Gatchalian, who could have been changing clothes at the time of the accident, was able to seek help from Crime Laboratory personnel in the adjacent room.

He was rushed to the East Avenue Medical Center but died an hour later.
