7 Maute men surrender in Lanao Sur
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Seven members of the Maute group surrendered in Pagayawan, Lanao del Sur on Tuesday.
The militants also turned over three M1 Garand rifles, a carbine, four caliber .45 pistols and a 9mm to the Joint Task Force Ranao of the 55th Infantry Battalion, Maj. Gen. Roseller Murillo, commander of the First Army Division and Task Force ZampeLan, said.
Murillo said the names of the surrenderees, who underwent debriefing, were withheld for security reasons.
He said the number of Maute militants and their followers has dwindled following the death of their leaders in the fighting in Marawi.
“We encourage the others to lay down their arms to live peacefully,” Murillo said.
Meanwhile, in Maguindanao, authorities defused two bombs recovered along the Cotabato-Isulan highway in Barangay Macasampen, Guindulungan and Tamontaka, Datu Odin Sinsuat on Tuesday night.
Capt. Ervin Encinas of the 6th Infantry Division said there are indications that members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters planted the bombs.– John Unson
