Agusan Norte vice mayor, bodyguard face illegal firearms raps

Ben Serrano - The Philippine Star

KITCHARAO, Agusan del Norte, Philippines —  If found guilty beyond reasonable doubt, this town’s vice mayor and his bodyguard could be jailed for 30 years for illegal possession of firearms, ammunition and explosives and gunrunning.

Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Region 13 chief Senior Superintendent Choli Caduyac identified the suspects as Vice Mayor Jenrey Montante and Sergio Rafal, the politician’s bodyguard.

CIDG operatives arrested the suspects Thursday and seized an Ingram automatic, M-16 Armalite, two baby Armalite rifles, two .45 caliber pistols, augmentation grenades and ammunition.

Caduyac said the CIDG had been monitoring the suspects after intelligence reports showed that they were trafficking in arms, with supplies allegedly smuggled from Cebu.

Caduyac added that clients of the suspects included politicians who are preparing for next year’s mid-term elections.

Montante and Rafal will be charged today.

Montante is the younger brother of Aristotle, this town’s mayor.
