CHR slams killing of Manila village chief

Janvic Mateo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has called on the Philippine National Police (PNP) to immediately resolve the killing of a barangay chairman who was gunned down after attending an anti-drug seminar in Manila on Thursday.

“The CHR condemns another episode of injustice with the killing of Angelo Rivero Jr., a barangay captain in Sta. Cruz, who was shot publicly in broad daylight – ironically after reportedly attending a seminar on illegal drugs,” CHR spokesperson Jacqueline de Guia said.

“We continue express alarm over deaths that continue to be unresolved, let alone reach our courts for proper trial,” she added.

Rivero was riding his motorcycle when two men on a motorcycle shot him at the corner of Burgos and Ma. Orosa streets.

The victim had just left an anti-illegal drugs seminar when the incident happened.

De Guia said the police should ensure that killings would not go unpunished.

“We urge the PNP to act on these crimes so that perpetrators can be made accountable for their crimes and this situation of worsening impunity gets addressed with utmost urgency,” she added.
