Jail guards, drug suspect slain in ambush in Cebu City

Emmanuel Tupas - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Two jail guards and an inmate with alleged links to suspected drug lord Peter Lim were killed in an ambush in Cebu City yesterday.

Provincial Guards 1 Joel Teves and Bernie Bayotas and Jerryfer Perigrino were in a van on their way to a court hearing when they were waylaid in Barangay Kalunasan at around 10 a.m.

The shooting occurred only a few meters away from the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center.

The gunmen escaped on a motorcycle.

The Central Visayas police said Teves and Bayotas helped Perigrino smuggle cell phones, shabu and marijuana into the jail.

Perigrino was arrested last January for possession of shabu with an estimated street value of P3 million.

Chief Superintendent Debold Sinas, Central Visayas police chief, said they received reports that the killings were perpetrated by  the victims’  rival drug ring.
