Negros Occidental town vice mayor, husband surrender
BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The vice mayor of Moises Padilla town in Negros Occidental and her husband, who are facing charges for illegal possession of firearms and explosives, surrendered yesterday.
The relatives of Vice Mayor Ella Celestina Garcia-Yulo and her husband Felix Mathias III sought the assistance of the Department of the Interior and Local Government to facilitate their surrender.
Chief Superintendent John Bulalacao, Western Visayas police director, met the couple at the city police headquarters and assured them of their safety.
The couple went into hiding after La Carlota Regional Trial Court Judge Cyclamen Jison-Fernandez issued a warrant of arrest last Aug 20.
Police said two caliber .45 pistols and two grenades were recovered from the Mitsubishi Adventure of the couple when pulled over at a checkpoint on Dec. 19, 2017.
Karol Joseph Chiu, counsel for the Yulos, maintained that his clients are innocent of the charges filed against them. He said they filed a petition before the Department of Justice to review the charges.
