NPA owns slay of another barangay chief
BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The New People’s Army (NPA) has claimed responsibility for the killing on Aug. 30 of Mario Gonzales, barangay chairman of Panciao in Manjuyod, Negros Oriental, the fifth to be killed since June.
Juan Malaya, spokesperson of the NPA’s Mt. Cansermon Operational Front Command, accused Gonzales in a statement of being an intelligence asset of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police.
Gonzales was the fifth barangay chairman killed since June 12 on Negros island, including two in Isabela, Negros Occidental and two in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental, police and military records showed.
Gonzales’ death should serve as a warning to those who allow themselves to be used by the military, Malaya said.
