MANILA, Philippines — The trough or extension of a low-pressure area off Samar will continue to bring rains in parts of the country this weekend, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said yesterday.

“This weather system will bring scattered to widespread light to moderate to  heavy rains over Surigao del Norte, Dinagat, Bicol  and the Visayas in the next 24 hours,” PAGASA said.

Moderate to heavy rains will also prevail over Eastern Visayas, particularly Biliran, Leyte and Samar provinces.

PAGASA advised residents near river channels as well as low-lying and mountainous areas to brace for possible flooding and landslides.

The low-pressure area was spotted 200 kilometers east of Catbalogan City at 3 p.m. yesterday. It was not expected to develop into a tropical cyclone in the next 24 hours.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will still experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rains due to thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, PAGASA continues to monitor a typhoon outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) that may enhance the southwest monsoon.

At 3 p.m. yesterday, the eye of Jebi was located 2,205 kms east of Aparri, Cagayan. It packed winds of 205 kms per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 255 kph.

The typhoon, which is likely to develop into a super typhoon, was forecast to enter the northeastern boundary of PAR tomorrow and exit the country by Monday.
