MANILA, Philippines — The Makati City government will construct an intralink rail subway system that will crisscross the city and will be completed by 2025, Mayor Abby Binay said Wednesday.

The $3.7-billion intracity railway project – a public-private partnership with IRC Properties Inc. – will have its groundbreaking by the end of the year, she said during the weekly Kapihan sa Manila Bay news briefing.

It will run for 10 kilometers and will connect the central business district along Ayala Avenue, Makati city hall, the Poblacion heritage site, University of Makati and the Ospital ng Makati.

The planned subway can also accommodate 700,000 passengers per day and will be constructed near the Metro Rail Transit, the Pasig River ferry, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency-funded Metro Manila subway.

She allayed fears that the subway project will cause massive traffic, noting that it will only cause “minimal” traffic if at all because the construction will be underground and there would be no road closures.

Once the project is finished, Binay said she will consider this pet project her “crowning glory” by the time she ends her possible three terms by 2025.
