Manila court OKs Kerwin Espinosa’s continued NBI detention

Rey Galupo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines —  A Manila regional trial court (RTC) judge yesterday granted the petition of self-confessed drug lord Kerwin Espinosa to remain at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) detention cell.

In his decision, Manila RTC Branch 26 Judge Silvino Pampilo Jr. gave weight to Espinosa’s fear that his life could be in danger if he is transferred to the Makati City Jail. The court has given the prosecution five days to answer Espinosa’s petition.

Several weeks ago, Espinosa’s counsel Jesus Obejero Jr. said that his client’s possible transfer to the Makati City Jail from the NBI detention facility would place him in great danger.

The petition reiterated the earlier ruling of the Supreme Court recognizing the threat to the detainee’s life and allowing him to stay at the NBI.

The commitment order was in relation to another illegal drug case filed against Espinosa and his co-accused, businessman Peter Lim, at the Makati RTC.
