BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Funds for Philippine Military Academy cadets are intact, the academy clarified after a former official was dismissed for malversation.

Maj. Chamberlain Esmino, PMA spokesman, said "cadets have enough funds for their training" although he could not immediately give an exact figure. He clarified that Lt. Col. Hector Marana was dismissed from his post as custodian for cadets' personal allowances in December 2012.

The government allots P2 million for each cadet to cover the cost of four years at the premier military training institution. It also covers allowances for basic necessities.

The PMA made the clarification after President Rodrigo Duterte announced Maraña's dismissal for malversation of P15 million in funds for cadets.

Col. Edgard Arevalo, Armed Forces spokesman, earlier said Maraña had been restricted to the military camp since June 2015, when he was arraigned for charges of fraud against the government, conduct unbecoming of an officer and a gentleman, and conduct prejudicial to good order and military discipline.

A military court found Maraña guilty of malversation in July. He faces between six and ten years in prison.

Marana was dismissed together with at least 20 other military officials who were charged over procurement anomalies at the AFP Medical Center, or V. Luna Medical Center. — Artemio Dumlao
