Abu leader killed; 5 surrender in Sulu

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — A sub-leader of the Abu Sayyaf was killed in an encounter in Patikul, Sulu yesterday.

The fatality was identified as Abdul Ajim Abdulgani, alias Suraka Ingog.

Police and military personnel launched an offensive, which targeted a hideout of the Abu Sayyaf in Sitio Kalimayahan, Barangay Latih, according to Rear Admiral Rene Medina, Naval Forces Western Mindanao commander.

Medina said Abdulgani was with the group of Muamar Askali, alias Abu Rami, who was killed in a military operation in Bohol in April last year.

The fatality yielded a caliber .45 pistol, various types of ammunition and P2,241 in cash, police said.

Medina said pursuit operations are ongoing to prevent terrorist attacks and kidnappings in other areas.

Last week, authorities uncovered a kidnapping plot of the Abu Sayyaf in Palawan.

A few hours after the encounter in Patikul, Ali Hassan, a mid-level Abu Sayyaf leader, and four of his followers – Omar Innol; Simal and Kimbo, both surnamed Alam, and Hayudini Amil, a bomb maker – surrendered to government forces in Jolo.

Lt. Col. Gerry Besana, Western Mindanao Command spokesman, said the bandits turned over four Garand rifles.

A total of 81 bandits have surrendered in Sulu since January.
