PNP looks into helicopter snafu

Cecille Suerte Felipe - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) is checking what went wrong when a helicopter toppled a multimillion-peso giant LED screen, injuring several people, during the celebration of the 117th Police Service anniversary at Camp Crame in Quezon City on Wednesday.

The event, attended by several government officials led by President Duterte, “was very successful except there was a bit of a snafu,” according to PNP spokesman Senior Superintendent Benigno Durana.

The Bell 429 helicopter’s blades generated a strong wind that toppled tents and the giant LED screen, which was rented for the event, when its pilot did a flyby.

Durana clarified that “checking” does not mean conducting an investigation. He said the PNP is assessing the damage and how much it cost.

The helicopter is the first air asset given to the PNP under the Duterte administration, he said.
