MANILA, Philippines — The suspect in the killing of a prosecutor from the Office of the Ombudsman was shot dead after he allegedly tried to grab a firearm from a police escort in Quezon City yesterday.

Chief Superintendent Guillermo Eleazar, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) director, said Angelo Avenido Jr., 31, attempted to grab the firearm of Police Officer 2 Ramil Langa.

The handgun went off during the scuffle, hitting him below the face. He was brought to East Avenue Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival, Eleazar said in a text message.

The incident happened at the second floor of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (QCPD-CIDU) building in Barangay Sikatuna Village at around 10:45 a.m.

QCPD director Chief Superintendent Joselito Esquivel Jr. said Avenido was being booked prior to his transfer to the Quezon City Jail.

“The process included taking of latent prints so he was not handcuffed,” he said in a phone interview.

Avenido is accused of stabbing to death Madonna Joy Tanyag, who was five months pregnant, along Visayas Avenue in Barangay Vasra on June 4. He was facing a charge of robbery with homicide.

Esquivel said Avenido may have gone crazy after realizing that he had no way out of his predicament.

“He was going to be transferred to an overcrowded detention facility,” he said.
