Trader hurt in Tondo ambush

Rey Galupo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — A businessman was seriously wounded in an ambush in Tondo, Manila yesterday morning.

Juan Miguel Tan, 46, of Malabon City, had just emerged from a bank and was on his way to Manila in a beige Toyota Avanza (A4-X299) when two men on a motorcycle waylaid him as he stopped for a red light along Pier 18 at around 9:20 a.m.

Manila Police District Station 1 commander Superintendent Jay Dimaandal said Tan suffered three gunshots to the body and head.

The victim remains in critical condition at the Tondo General Hospital, Dimaandal said.

Investigators said the assailants broke the car’s window and took the paper bag, which they thought contained cash.

“The suspects did not know that the bag only contained documents and receipts of the victim’s previous transactions,” Dimaandal told The STAR.
