Phivolcs: Mayon Volcano may erupt anew
LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines — Mayon Volcano’s sulphur dioxide emissions were almost five times the normal threshold yesterday while “pronounced inflation” of its mid-slopes was recently observed, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Phivolcs said Mayon emitted 2,398 tons of sulphur yesterday compared to only 1,760 tons three days ago and its normal threshold of 500 tons a day.
As Mayon remains under Alert Level 2, Phivolcs said sudden explosions, lava collapses, pyroclastic density currents and ashfalls could still occur.
Resident volcanologist Ed Laguerta had earlier said they could not lower Mayon’s alert level due to its continuous degassing, inflated surface and visible crater glow.
Laguerta reminded the public anew not to venture into the volcano’s seven-kilometer extended danger zone.
Phivolcs also warned the public to stay away from active river channels and identified lahar-prone areas in the southern and eastern section of the volcano.
