Phivolcs not lowering Mayon’s alert level
LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines — Mayon Volcano’s alert stays at Level 2 due to the possibility of a “recurring eruption,” an official of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said yesterday.
Mayon’s resident volcanologist Ed Laguerta said a post-eruption recurrence is not a remote possibility. He noted that Mayon’s abnormal condition in the past months did not result in an eruption accompanied by a degassed magma.
“This means that the anticipated strong eruption of Mayon... was aborted,” Laguerta told The STAR.
He said Mayon’s sulphur dioxide emissions remains high at 1,000 to 2,000 tons a day compared to the normal threshold of 500 tons.
Laguerta said volcanic quakes and a faint crater glow were also monitored around the volcano.
Laguerta said they would consider lowering the alert if sulphur dioxide emissions would drop to normal volume and the crater glow is no longer visible.
