Renovated Catanduanes airport inaugurated

Rudy Santos - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The rehabilitated passenger terminal at the Virac airport in Catanduanes will be inaugurated today.

Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, Undersecretary for Aviation and Airports Manuel Antonio Tamayo and Jim Sydiongco, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines director general, will lead the inauguration.

The rehabilitation project, which began in January 2016, was completed last May 14. The terminal can accomodate 300 passengers.

The P39-million project, which was initially targeted for completion on July 20, 2016, was suspended for additional retrofitting of the old building,  which was built in 1963.

The project was suspended again in December 2016 when the airport was damaged by Typhoon Nina. Repair works cost another P4.5 million.
