Quick aid for teachers hurt, killed in poll-related violence

Mayen Jaymalin - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Teachers who suffered injuries and relatives of those who died while serving in elections will be compensated immediately, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said over the weekend.

The financial assistance will be released to the victims or their beneficiaries within a month’s time as provided under the new rules and regulations of the Comelec.

The poll body’s committee on claims and assessment (CCA) will evaluate and decide within 30 days upon receipt of the claim.

“Once approved, the amount to be reimbursed should be released to the claimant within seven days from receipt of the decision,” the Comelec said.

If disapproved, the claimant will be allowed to file for reconsideration within 10 days from receipt of the decision.

Claims for death or medical assistance and other benefits for election-related risks should be filed with the CCA through the office of the election officer (OEO) within 60 days after the occurrence of death or injury.

The OEO should endorse the claim to the CCA within three days from receipt of documents.

Claims for death benefits should be filed by the victim’s spouse, legitimate child, parents, siblings or grandparents.

Those who suffered injuries or illness would receive benefits depending on the diagnosis of the attending physician.
