Coin toss decides Naga SK poll winner

Celso Amo - The Philippine Star

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines — A tie in the election for Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) chairman in Barangay Sta. Cruz in Naga City has been settled through a coin toss.

Ray John Saniel, whose votes were tied at 252 with Kian Gomez, was proclaimed winner after the coin toss at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office at around 9 a.m. yesterday.

“I prayed hard and readied myself for whoever Lady Luck would choose as winner,” Saniel said.

The Comelec stopped the proclamation of winning SK candidates in the barangay after Gomez proposed a recount to break the tie.

The Omnibus Election Code provides the drawing of lots in case of tie of two or more candidates. A tie between two candidates is usually decided by a coin toss.
