NPA leader killed, 4 others nabbed in Laguna
LAGUNA, Philippines — A New People’s Army (NPA) leader was killed in an encounter with police officers in Pangil, Laguna on Wednesday.
Ismael Criste, 60, alias Maeng, leader of the Rebolusyonariong Buwis Para sa Kaaway na Uri, an alleged liquidation squad of the NPA, died at the scene.
Luis Alano Jr., 44; Shirley Martinez, 47; Felicidad Villages, 60, and Cristy Lacuarta, 30, were arrested.
The rebels fired at police officers manning a checkpoint in Barangay Dambo, according to Chief Superintendent Guillermo Eleazar, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) police director.
Eleazar said two caliber .45 pistols, a Garand, two hand grenades, a 9mm sub-machine gun, a caliber .38 revolver and various types of ammunition were recovered from the suspects.
He said the rebels, who were reportedly targeting police officers in Alaminos and Sta. Cruz towns, were under surveillance for two days. – Emmanuel Tupas
