Reds surrender in Mountain Province

Artemio Dumlao - The Philippine Star

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet , Philippines — Two New People’s Army (NPA) rebels and 17 members of the so-called Militia ng Bayan surrendered in Barangay Poblacion, Paracelis, Mountain Province on Thursday afternoon.

Rogelio del Rosario, 41, alias Eric, and Benny Tuginay, 26, alias Manny, of the NPA’s Frank Guerrilla unit also turned over their rifles and ammunition to personnel of the Paracelis police and 54th Infantry Battalion.

“The surrender of... communist terrorists and their supporters showed their frustration and loss of trust and confidence in the NPA leadership, coupled with fear from continuous and intense pressure brought by government offensives,” Chief Superintendent Edward Carranza, Cordillera police director, said.

Carranza vowed to help provide livelihood and social services assistance to the rebel returnees.
