UP: Gunman in campus fake news

Janvic Mateo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The administration of the University of the Philippines (UP) yesterday denied rumors that a gunman was seen in a building in its flagship campus in Diliman, Quezon City.

“Reports of a gunman at the UP Diliman campus are not true, as verified by our security teams and agencies. Nonetheless, please stay safe,” the university said in a statement.

The UP Diliman office of the vice chancellor for community affairs likewise denied reports of a bomb in the campus.

“Someone is spreading false reports that there is a bomb and gunman at Palma Hall,” it said in Filipino on its Facebook account. “This is not true. #NoToFakeNews.”

Classes at the university were already suspended when the rumors circulated. However, some offices and libraries remained open for the students.

Malacañang suspended classes in Metro Manila yesterday due to an alleged imminent threat of a non-existent transport strike.
