House-to-house checking of voters eyed
MANILA, Philippines — Amid reports of fake voters in the upcoming barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections, the church-based Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) wants house-to-house checking of voters nationwide.
The PPCRV recently filed a petition before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to be the poll body’s accredited citizens’ arm for the May 14 synchronized polls.
The PPCRV asked the Comelec for copies of registered voters per precinct as well as the list of deactivated voters.
James Jimenez, spokesman for the Comelec, said complaints were filed before prosecutor’s offices in Metro Manila, alleging that thousands of fake voters were able to register using fictitious addresses.
The Comelec will conduct a hearing tomorrow on the PPCRV’s petition for accreditation as the poll body citizens’ arm.
The poll watchdog assured the Comelec that it would remain non-partisan during the election period.
The PPCRV said it does not solicit contributions from any foreign government or organization.
