6 New People’s Army rebels surrender in Maguindanao
MAGUINDANAO, Philippines — Six New People’s Army (NPA) rebels surrendered in Ampatuan town yesterday.
Artem Turunan, Leo Bakat, Biboy Indofo, Rolando Kanakan and his siblings Lonking and Gilbert of the NPA’s Guerrilla Front 73 surrendered to the Army’s First Mechanized Battalion, Lt. Gen. Carlito Galvez, Jr. of the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) said.
The surrenderees reportedly harassed villagers who refused to pay protection money on a regular basis.
“The Westmincom is grateful to municipal and provincial officials who helped convince the rebels to surrender and avail themselves of the reconciliation program of President Duterte,” Galvez said.
More than a hundred NPA guerrillas have surrendered to the the First Mechanized Battalion and the 33rd Infantry Battalion since last year.
Galvez said the 6th Infantry Division would help the surrenderees avail themselves of livelihood assistance from the provincial government of Maguindanao and Sultan Kudarat.
