GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines — Authorities arrested and detained Friday a suspected member of the Islamic State-inspired Ansar Al-Khilafa Philippines for violation of the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.
Chief Inspector Aldrin Gonzales, information officer of Police Regional Office-12, said Sunday that Urbano Abdullah, 43, was nabbed by pursuing police officers at Barangay Kanalo in Maasim town in Sarangani last Friday.
Gonzales said the joint operation of the Sarangani provincial police and the Maasim municipal police that led to Abdullah's arrest was assisted by local officials and vigilant barangay leaders.
Senior members of different municipal peace and order councils in Sarangani province have confirmed that Abdullah is a key member of the Ansar Al-Khilafa Philippines, which operates in the fashion of the Islamic State.
Gonzales said their regional director, Chief Superintendent Marcelo Morales, has extended his gratitude to the civilian sectors that helped locate Abdullah in Maasim, a seaside town in Sarangani.
Morales ordered the immediate prosecution of Abdullah using the .45 caliber pistol recovered from him as evidence.
