Soldier killed by riding-in-tandem gunmen
COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Two men on a motorcycle shot dead a Marine sergeant and wounded another in an attack along a stretch of a busy thoroughfare here Friday.
Sgt. Ferdinand Ulang and companion Sgt. Arnel Navarro were riding a motorcycle together en route to the downtown area here when gunmen trailing behind shot them with .45 caliber pistols.
Ulang died on the spot while Navarro sustained bullet wounds from the attack. Navarro is now confined in a hospital in the city.
They both belong to the 7th Marine Battalion based in nearby North Upi town in Maguindanao.
Investigators are still trying to identify the culprits and determine their motive for the attack.
About two hours later, a team of Marines dispatched to attend to their slain companion gunned down a suspected killer-for-hire named Mohammad after he attacked with a pistol Alfredo Tumbaga while near the premises of a private mortuary here.
The suspect was killed instantly while Tumbaga, a security officer in the Regional Legislative Assembly-Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, died in a hospital several hours later.
