MANILA, Philippines — President Duterte’s long-time aide Christopher “Bong” Go has reiterated that he is not keen on running for the Senate, but said he might change his mind if Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez agrees to have him as wedding godfather.
“I repeat, I am not interested in running for senator in 2019. I will serve Mayor Duterte until my death, assuming I do not die ahead of him,” Go said on Friday.
“But if Speaker Alvarez fulfills his promise that he would make me his godfather on his wedding, I might change my mind,” he said. “That’s my deal with the speaker.”
Alvarez said he would convince Go to run for senator under the administration Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan so that the party would have a candidate from Mindanao.
Go, who supervises the Presidential Management Staff, is a native of Davao City.
Go said Alvarez has been calling him ninong since he offered to be the Speaker’s wedding godfather.
Alvarez is separated from his wife Emelita and has a girlfriend.
Duterte, who claims to have two wives and two girlfriends, defended Alvarez’s action, saying the Speaker is not a Catholic.
