2 boys drown in quarry pit

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Two siblings drowned as they were collecting sand and gravel from a quarry pit in this city on Friday afternoon.

John Carlo Francisco, 7, and his brother John Christian, 5, were filling their sacks with sand and gravel when they slipped and fell into the quarry at around 5 p.m., police said.

Neighbors rushed to rescue the boys when they failed to surface.

The victims were declared dead on arrival at the West Metro Medical Center.
