5 gunned down in Calabarzon

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — Two suspects and three other persons were shot dead in separate incidents in Calabarzon over the weekend.

Mark Lowie Surwelos, alias Mac-Mac, shot it out with police operatives serving a warrant of arrest for murder at his residence in Barangay Punta, Calamba, Laguna on Saturday, Superintendent Sancho Celedio, city police chief, said yesterday.

Surwelos died while being treated at the JP Rizal Hospital.

The body of Juano Mendoza, 37, which bore gunshot wounds, was found in Barangay San Cristobal also in Calamba.

Police said a sachet of shabu and drug paraphernalia were recovered near Mendoza’s body.

An alias Bay and a man who has yet to be identified were found dead in Barangay Dela Paz, Antipolo, Rizal and Anilao, Lipa, Batangas, respectively, also on Saturday.

Samuel Caratay, 67, was at his store in Barangay Pooc, Sta. Rosa, Laguna when an unidentified man shot him at around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. He died at the scene.

Investigations into the killings are underway.
