BAGUIO CITY, Philippines – A lawmaker has called on the public to remain vigilant to prevent abuses by barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials who will keep their positions in a holdover capacity if the elections will be postponed.

Abra Rep. Joseph Sto. Nino Bernos said there should be no interruption in the delivery of public services if Congress decides to postpone the elections.

“Filipinos must ensure that incumbent barangay officials and SK will not abuse their mandate,” Bernos said.

Congressmen agreed in a caucus on Monday to postpone the Oct. 23 barangay and SK elections to May 2018.

Meanwhile, former Baguio Mayor Mauricio Domogan said he does not support the  postponement of the elections, including proposals for President Duterte to appoint officers-in-charge.

Domogan said appointing barangay officials would deprive the people of their right to select their representatives through an election.
