2 BIFF leaders killed in shootout with police in Maguindanao

MAGUINDANAO, Philippines — Law enforcement officers killed two members of a group claiming allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria in a brief encounter on Sunday in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao.

The fatalities, Raul Angkay and Edz Dalending, both belong to one of three factions in the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters.

All three BIFF groups use the black ISIS flag and are all known for espousing hatred to Christian and moderate Muslims.

Senior Superintendent Agustin Tello, director of the Maguindanao provincial police, said on Monday that his men and agents of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao were forced to neutralize Angkay and Dalending because they refused to yield while being arrested.

Angkay, a self-styled medical officer of the BIFF, is included in one of the two arrest orders for local terrorists issued by the Department of National Defense after President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law last month in connection with the hostilities in Marawi City.

Dalending, on the other hand, had long been under surveillance for alleged criminal offenses and his alleged involvement in recent bombings in central Mindanao.

Tello said the team that raided their hideout in Barangay Labu-Labu in Shariff Aguak found a .45-cal pistol and a fragmentation grenade after the shootout.

The remains of Angkay and Dalending were immediately turned over to their relatives for immediate burial in keeping with an Islamic tradition of burying the dead within 24 hours.
