MANILA, Philippines -  Five Filipino seafarers who were kidnapped by Nigerian pirates last month have returned home.

Edgardo Olea, 49, of Taytay, Rizal; Ramses Sardena, 35, of Pangasinan; Villamor Pascua, 57, of Sampaloc, Manila; Franklin Ebrado, 35, of Cebu City, and Abner Marana, 34, of Cauayan, Isabela arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 on Tuesday afternoon.

According to reports, Nigerian pirates attacked a cargo vessel off the coast of Nigeria and kidnapped its crew, including the Filipino seafarers on March 30.

The kidnappers freed their captives after the shipping company reportedly paid ransom.

“We were almost killed during the attack. We never thought that we could be with our families again,” one of the seamen said.

They expressed hope that they would be able to get assistance from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.
