Rent-sangla suspect slain
STA. ROSA CITY, Laguna, Philippines – A suspect in a multimillion-peso car rental scam was killed on Wednesday.
Eleanor Rosales, 58, was about to enter her house on Zavalla street in Barangay Malusak in this city at around 3:30 p.m. when she was shot.
Closed-circuit television camera footage shows Rosales running away from the motorcycle-riding suspects.
The gunman wore a baseball cap while his companion was wearing a helmet.
Rosales was the secretary of Rafaela Anunciacion, the alleged mastermind of the rent-sangla scam.
Rosales, Anunciacion and seven others were charged with carjacking, swindling and syndicated estafa before the Department of Justice. Rosales and Anunciacion were arrested, but freed on bail.
Anunciacion’s group allegedly duped more than 800 vehicle owners across the country into lending their vehicles, which they later pawned.
The Highway Patrol Group seized more than 400 vehicles in anti-carjacking operations in Bulacan, Metro Manila and Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon). The National Bureau of Investigation and Task Force Limbas recovered 275 other vehicles.
