LPA seen to bring flashfloods, landslides

MANILA, Philippines -  The state weather bureau yesterday warned residents of Surigao, Leyte and Samar against possible flashfloods and landslides due to heavy rains from a low-pressure area off Northern Mindanao.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Northern Mindanao and Eastern Visayas would experience moderate to occasionally heavy rains beginning this morning.

The rest of Mindanao and the Visayas were expected to have occasional rains and scattered thunderstorms starting last night until today.

As of 4 p.m., the low-pressure was spotted 440 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.

The weather system is unlikely to develop into a tropical cyclone, according to PAGASA.

It is expected to bring light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms over the Bicol region as well as in the provinces of Aurora, Quezon and Isabela by tomorrow.

Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains will prevail over Ilocos, Cagayan Valley and the Cordilleras due to the northeast monsoon.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms.

By Wednesday until Friday, the whole country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms, PAGASA said.
