Tagaytay radar back in operation

MANILA, Philippines -  Operations at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) have returned to normal after the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) lifted on Saturday night a notice to airmen for the shutdown of the Tagaytay radar.

The radar was shut down from March 6 to 11 to pave the way for maintenance and repair works.

The flight average at the country’s premier airport is now back to 40 from 32 per hour.

CAAP deputy director general for operations Capt. Manuel Antonio Tamayo assured the public that they are doing everything to secure passengers.           

Tamayo acknowledged the efforts of aviation stakeholders, airline operators and the management of the Manila International Airport Authority, operator of NAIA and Clark International Airport, whose work contributed to the completion of the radar repair on time.

The repair covered the overhauling of the radar’s antenna and replacement of its drive motor and rotary joint.

The overhaul is necessary for the radar’s integration with the soon-to-be launched satellite-based CNS/ATM, or the communications, navigation, surveillance/air traffic management system.

The system enables aircraft operators to meet their departure and arrival schedule and adhere to their preferred flight profiles with minimum constraints and without compromising safety.
