Quake victims hit high commodity prices

Ben Serrano - The Philippine Star

SURIGAO CITY , Philippines  – Victims of a recent earthquake that devastated this city have expressed disappointment over the continuous rise in the prices of basic commodities, including construction materials.

Liny Diaz of Barangay San Juan, whose house was among those damaged by the quake, said the poor like her could not afford to repair their houses if the prices of construction materials remain high.

Diaz said that more than a week after the quake, they have not yet repaired any part of their house.

Two other housewives, Charito Llamera and Charito Ensomo, said the prices of chicken and fish sold at a local market have also increased.

They urged the government to freeze the prices of basic commodities in the quake-hit areas.

They said Surigao City has the largest fish port, yet the prices of fish and other marine products remain high.

Even the tamban is so expensive, they said.
