MANILA, Philippines — Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada on Monday ordered the resignation of more than 600 enforcers of the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau (MTPB).

Estrada said he received several complaints that MTPB enforcers were involved in extortion and other illegal activities, prompted him to ask that they file their courtesy resignation.

Estrada, however, said he is not only calling for the resignation of enforcers but also MTPB employees in office to avoid corruption within the ranks.

"I want all of them out," the mayor said at a news conference in the city hall.

MTPB chief Dennis Alcoreza said 244 Manila Police District officers were assigned to replace the 600 MTPB enforcers and manage the city's traffic.

Estrada said the MTPB enforcers posed to resign may reapply but they will be facing new and stricter set of qualifications.

He said he will form a selection committee to handle the former employees who wish to reenter the bureau as MTPD enforcers. — Rosette Adel
