OWWA eyes protection for OFWs’ kids

Mayen Jaymalin - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Following the death of a two-year-old son of overseas Filipino workers, the government is considering developing programs to protect children of OFWs, an official said yesterday.

Overseas Workers Welfare Administration chief Hans Cacdac said OWWA will work with other government agencies and other child rights advocates.

He said Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello has ordered OWWA to ensure the protection of children of OFWs from crime and abuse.

“It is clear that not only OFWs need protection, but also their young children,” Cacdac said.

Last Saturday, the mother of a two-year-old boy who was allegedly beaten to death by his guardians returned home to Davao City from Bahrain.

Based on initial investigation, the boy’s guardians beat up the child after he urinated in his pants.

Cacdac said the boy’s mother will be given livelihood assistance and counseling.
