Signal No. 1 raised over 8 areas in Luzon as Typhoon 'Ferdie' intensifies

MANILA, Philippines (Updated 5:32 pm) — The state weather bureau raised Signal No. 1 on Monday over eight areas in Luzon as Typhoon "Ferdie" (international name: Meranti) intensifies.
Signal No. 1 was raised over Cagayan, Northern Isabela, Kalinga, Apayao, Abra, Ilocos Norte, Batanes and Babuyan Group of Islands.
In the 5 p.m. severe weather bulletin of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the eye of "Ferdie" was located at 780 km east of Aparri, Cagayan at 4 p.m.
The typhoon has maximum sustained winds of 185 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 220 kph.
An estimated moderate to heavy rainfall amount is expected within the 500 km diameter of the typhoon.
It is expected to be in the vicinity of Batanes on Wednesday morning.
