Dengue cases in Negros top epidemic threshold
BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – Dengue cases in Negros Occidental have surpassed the epidemic threshold.
The 193 cases recorded from Aug. 21 to 27 surpassed the epidemic threshold of 170 cases and the alert threshold of 120 cases, according to the provincial health office.
At least 3,431 cases were recorded from January to August, or an increase of 196 percent, compared to the same period last year.
Twenty-four deaths were recorded, eight of them in Bacolod City.
Provincial health officer Ernell Tumimbang said there is no need to declare an epidemic, saying the deaths have not even reached one percent. She added that the number of cases have dropped since Aug. 27.
On Wednesday, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Negros Occidental allocated P2 million to address the dengue problem in the province.
